As a result of great efforts on the part of our faculty members and graduate students, our department has gained international recognition. During the past 25 years, the Ministry of Education conferred Academic Awards for Outstanding Research upon four of our faculty members; five received awards from prestigious foundations; and nearly twenty papers were selected as the best papers of the year by the Institute of Chinese Engineers and the Institute of Chinese Chemical Engineers. Recently, our faculty members published more than 150 papers annually in peer-reviewed journals. 

Research interests of the faculty members in this department include transport phenomena, process systems engineering, surface science, separation technology, biotechnology, electrochemical technology, catalysis and reaction engineering, manufacture of special chemicals, polymer science and technology, composite materials, ceramics and pollution control. To keep pace with the recent progress in new technologies, research in photoelectronic materials, biomedical materials, sensors, special membranes, and laser applications is being undertaken extensively in this Department.

Fifty laboratories, equipped with modern facilities, have been allocated in the top seven stories of a twelve-story building. Laboratories of related fields have been grouped together to facilitate resource-sharing and promote interactions among students.

Group seminars are held regularly. Because of the high teacher/student ratio, the students can obtain more advice from teachers in our department than in others.
